5 Essentials for a Strong First Impression

Despite living in a digital world, the humble business card is still one of the most powerful print tools out there. It's often the first impression someone gets of your brand - and when done right, it can leave a lasting one.

At 101 Creative Solutions, we've seen thousands of business cards pass through our presses. Some are stunning. Others… not so much. If you're designing your own card or working with a designer, here are five best practices to keep in mind:

1. Keep It Simple and Focused

Your card doesn't need to do everything - it just needs to connect.

Stick to the essentials:

  • Your name
  • Your role or title
  • Company/organization name and logo
  • One or two ways to contact you (email and phone is usually enough)
  • A web address or QR code if you want to direct them online

Avoid cramming in every service, slogan, or social handle. White space is your friend — it helps your card feel clean and professional.

2. Use a Strong Hierarchy

Not everything should be the same size.

Make your name or company name the most prominent item on the card. Then build down from there: title, contact info, etc.

Think of it like a conversation. What do you want someone to notice first?

3. Stick to Brand Colours and Fonts

Your business card should feel like part of your brand identity.

  • Use your brand colours and logo consistently
  • Choose fonts that match your other materials (and keep it to 2 max, a heading and a body font)
  • Make sure all text is easy to read - especially at small sizes

If you don't have defined brand elements, this is a good time to start. A cohesive look builds credibility.

4. Design With Print in Mind

What looks good on screen doesn't always look good in print.

  • Use CMYK colour mode (not RGB)
  • Keep text and important images at least 1/8” away from the edge (safe zone)
  • Design your file at 300 DPI
  • Add bleed if your design goes to the edge (extend your graphics and backgrounds 1/8" beyond the edge of the card)

And if you're not sure - we're happy to check your file before it goes to print.

5. That Little Something... Extra

A great design gets even better with the right finishing touch.

Consider premium options like:

  • Vintage Kraft cardstock
  • Soft-touch "suede" laminate
  • Extra THICK cardstock with painted edges
  • "Attractive" magnetic stock
  • Different sizes, like portrait or square cards
  • Rounded corners

These extras can help you stand out - especially when used sparingly and purposefully.

The Big Takeaway

A business card isn't just about giving someone your contact info - it's about building trust and recognition in a wallet-sized format.
